How to convert MP4 to GIF

- 2Tweak the fps (lower = smaller file) and max width (480px is a good default).

Frequently asked questions
- Why are my GIFs so large?
- GIF is an ancient format with limited color palettes and no modern compression. A 10-second 1080p GIF at 30fps can easily hit 30MB. Lower the fps to 10–15 and the width to 480px and you'll land under 5MB for most content.
- Should I use GIF or WebM / MP4 instead?
- For social and chat, GIF still wins on universal 'just works' embedding. For web pages and docs, WebM / MP4 loop via <video muted loop autoplay> is far smaller and higher quality.
- Does Clapr upload my video?
- No. Conversion runs in-browser via ffmpeg.wasm; nothing is uploaded.
- What happens to the audio?
- GIFs are silent by definition, so audio is stripped. If you need audio, export to MP4 / WebM instead.
- Will it trim the video?
- Currently we convert the entire input. Trim / crop your MP4 first with any editor (or our upcoming trim tool) to keep the GIF small.
- Why lanczos for scaling?
- Lanczos gives the sharpest downscale for GIFs — the default flag we pass to ffmpeg's scale filter.
