Frequently asked questions

Why convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container — great on macOS/iOS, but Windows, Android, and most social platforms prefer MP4. Converting ensures the file plays everywhere without a download-and-install-a-codec dance.
Does Clapr upload my video to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm. Your video never leaves your device.
Is the conversion lossless?
Not exactly — we re-encode to H.264 + AAC for maximum compatibility. "High" quality is visually indistinguishable from the source for most content. If you need lossless, keep the original MOV for archive.
What about HEVC (H.265) inside MOV?
Yes, HEVC-in-MOV (the default for newer iPhones) is supported in-browser. Decode performance depends on your CPU; if a long 4K HEVC clip gets stuck, try the Fast preset or break it into shorter clips first.
Will Clapr add a watermark?
No watermark, ever. The output is a clean MP4 you own and can share anywhere.
Is there a file size limit?
Up to 4GB per file in-browser. Memory needed is roughly 2× the file size, so very large files may fail on low-RAM devices. Server-side fallback is coming in a later release.
What quality preset should I pick?
Balanced is the safe default for most phones / screen recordings. Fast for chat / email where size matters. High for content you will re-edit or upload to YouTube / Vimeo at their highest tier.
