A greyed-out "No Watermark" switch in CapCut's export panel is a locked control, not a glitch. CapCut's own help center names it in the same list as the 4K and 60fps options — all three are things the export panel can disable while leaving them on screen.
That detail is more useful than it sounds, because it tells you which half of the problem you are looking at: the switch itself, or the watermark it is supposed to turn off. Those have different causes and different fixes.
What the greyed-out toggle actually is
CapCut's article on being prompted to join Pro when exporting is direct about the desktop export panel: "Options like "4K", "60fps", or "No Watermark" appear grayed out or locked if you're not a Pro user."
Two things are worth reading slowly there:
- No Watermark is a switch inside the export panel, grouped with resolution and frame rate — not a preference buried elsewhere in the app.
- "Grayed out or locked" is CapCut's own description of the state. The control stays visible rather than disappearing, which is exactly why people assume the app is misbehaving.
One related quirk if the Pro prompt does appear on desktop: CapCut states that "The "Join" button opens your default browser and redirects you to the CapCut Web subscription page—desktop cannot process payments directly." So a browser window opening by itself at that moment is expected behaviour, not a hijack.
Check this first: the watermark may not be coming from the export panel at all
Before you spend any time on the switch, find out where the watermark is actually coming from. CapCut's help center says most of the time it is not the export step:
"In most cases, the watermark comes from a default ending clip or built-in template element—not from the export itself."
A second CapCut article lists the same causes more explicitly: "In most cases, CapCut allows watermark-free exports, but a watermark may appear if a template includes an ending clip, a stock asset requires attribution, or the export settings include the default outro."
CapCut's own steps on PC are short:
- "Move to the last clip on the timeline."
- "Select and delete the watermark/outro clip."
- "Review all tracks for hidden overlays or logos."
Step 3 is the one almost nobody does, and it is the official answer to "I deleted the ending clip and the watermark is still there" — CapCut is saying the branding can sit on a track as an overlay rather than at the end of the timeline.
Two more official prevention tips point the same direction. On avoiding templates: "The easiest way to export a watermark-free video is to create your project using CapCut's standard editing interface instead of pre-made templates. Templates often include a small CapCut watermark at the end of the video." And on assets: "If your project includes premium stickers, transitions, or filters that trigger a watermark, replacing them with free alternatives can remove the restriction. CapCut offers a large library of free assets that allow watermark-free exporting."

Other reasons the switch stays locked
Your project uses Pro materials
This is the case that catches people who assume the lock is about resolution. CapCut states: "Even if you choose 1080p, you may still be blocked from removing the watermark—because watermark removal on videos using Pro materials always requires Pro, regardless of resolution."
And on what happens if you dismiss the prompt: "If you cancel, you can still export—but with a CapCut watermark, even at 1080p." So the export is not blocked; only the watermark-free version of it is.
You do have a subscription, just not one that applies here
This is the most confusing variant, and CapCut documents it plainly. For CapCut Standard: "While you may be able to log into your account on different devices, subscription benefits are only available on the CapCut mobile app. This means premium features won't be accessible on the desktop or web versions." CapCut adds that Standard is "available only in certain regions" and that cross-platform access for those users "is more limited."
Separately, CapCut states that "Accessing membership features on PC requires a Pro subscription." And on what each tier reaches: "Standard users can access those features and materials with the blue diamond icon, but not the purple diamond icon."
If you are signed in, paying, and still looking at a greyed-out switch on desktop, the plan and the platform are the first pair to check against each other.
On mobile, length and resolution are part of the trigger
For the CapCut mobile app specifically, CapCut lists among the conditions that bring up the Pro prompt: "Or you selected "No Watermark" on a video that exceeds free-tier length/resolution," and "Or you're trying to export longer than 15 minutes (free limit varies by region)."
Read those as written. They are conditions that trigger the subscription prompt on the mobile app — CapCut does not say a free export is capped at 15 minutes, and it explicitly notes the free limit varies by region. The actual thresholds behind "free-tier length/resolution" are not published; check the official documentation if you need the number for your region.
Free account, 4K export
In its note on CapCut Online, CapCut says: "Free accounts may face watermarks or bitrate limits on 4K exports; CapCut Pro subscribers get unrestricted 4K." That is "may face," not "will face," and it is written about the browser version — do not carry it over to desktop.
What CapCut does not tell you
Worth knowing so you stop searching for it: CapCut's help center never explains whether the watermark is a rendering-stage overlay or a timeline asset, and it gives no size, position, or opacity details. The three sets of conditions above are all it documents. Anything more specific you find is somebody's guess.
How to tell it worked
Export, then open the file outside CapCut. CapCut's own advice for verifying an export is to "Play the exported video on a computer or external player—not just in the CapCut app—to confirm true quality" — the same habit catches a watermark you missed in the preview.
If branding is still there, go back and do the track sweep before anything else: last clip first, then every other track, then any premium sticker, transition, or filter still in the project.
