DaVinci Resolve H.264 Export: Studio Only? Three Answers

Whether H.264 export is "Studio only" in DaVinci Resolve depends on which operating system you are running — Blackmagic's own codec list answers the question three separate times, with three different wordings.

Almost every discussion of this treats it as one yes-or-no question about the free version. The official Supported Formats and Codecs PDF does not work that way. It splits into three chapters — macOS, Windows, and Rocky Linux 8.6 (CUDA) — and repeats the whole table in each one. The H.264 row reads differently in all three.

The limits, at a glance

Every cell below is the verbatim value from the H.264 and H.265 rows of the Supported Formats and Codecs document whose cover is dated July 2025. All three chapters list the same containers on these rows: mov, mkv and mp4.

Three things to read carefully in that table.

macOS carries no version qualifier at all. The words Studio, profile and Nvidia do not appear on the macOS H.264 or H.265 rows.

Windows is a limit, not a lockout. The row carries three pieces of information and none of them can be dropped: the profiles are 8-bit, they are whatever the operating system supplies, and what Studio adds is more profiles and GPU acceleration. It does not say the free version cannot encode H.264.

Linux is the strict one, and it is strict in the decode column too. "Studio Only" appears on the Linux H.264 row for reading the format, not only for writing it. The encode value names two conditions at the same time — "Studio and Nvidia graphics (GPU accelerated)" — so a Studio licence on an AMD or Intel GPU is not what that cell describes.

Why the wording differs by platform

The document's own NOTES section names the operating system and the hardware as separate factors, twice:

"For macOS and Windows, DaVinci Resolve will also read most formats natively supported by the operating system."

"GPU accelerated encoding and decoding of formats is subject to hardware support. Please refer to the hardware manufacturer's documentation."

Linux is not named in the first of those sentences, and the Windows row's phrase "OS-supported profiles" points at the same idea. Blackmagic does not spell out the reasoning beyond this, so treat it as what the table says rather than as an explanation of licensing policy.

There is also one H.264 limit that is not platform-specific at all. The same NOTES block states:

"Encoding video resolutions >= 4K is only supported with DaVinci Resolve Studio."

That collides with the product pages, which say of the free version: "You can use it to edit and finish up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160." Note the verbs — the codec list says encoding, the product page says edit and finish. Blackmagic never defines whether UHD 3840 x 2160 counts as the ">= 4K" in its own note, so check the official documentation before planning a UHD delivery on a free licence rather than trusting either sentence alone.

Which rows carry no Studio or Nvidia condition

Other rows in the same document carry no licence or GPU qualifier at all. The Apple ProRes rows (mov, mkv) list an encode value of "422, 422 HQ, 422 LT, 422 Proxy, 4444, 4444 XQ", and the DNxHR rows (mov, mxf Op1A, mxf Op-Atom) list "444 (10-bit, 12-bit), HQX (10-bit, 12-bit), HQ, LB, SQ" — and the document lists those rows identically across the three platform chapters. Two details on those same rows are easy to lose: ProRes inside an MXF container has an encode value of "–", so it is readable but not writable there, and the DNxHR Alpha cell reads "Yes (except LB)".

What the document does not spell out is what a free licence can still export on Linux — the Linux chapter marks H.264 and H.265 Studio Only down to the decode column and says nothing further about the free version. Check the official documentation rather than assuming a substitute codec is open to you there.

The obvious downside of those codecs is size: they are mastering formats. That is the step a browser-based compressor handles without another install or another licence.

Worth knowing before you plan around a re-encode: in the Codec Passthrough column of that document, H.264, H.265, MV-HEVC, AV1 and VP9 are all marked with a dash, on every platform and every container. Passthrough is described in the footnote as reusing the original source essence "if there are no effects or color changes to the clip" — so an H.264 output from Resolve is always a genuine encode, never a copy.

Platform-specific gotchas

Download the wrong PDF and you get the 15 BETA edition. Three files sit on Blackmagic's document server at once, named for Resolve 19, 20 and 21. The one named 21 has a footer on every page reading "DaVinci Resolve 15 BETA Supported Formats and Codecs", and it has no Alpha or Codec Passthrough columns at all. The one named 20 is the July 2025 edition quoted throughout this page.

"More profiles" is not defined in the codec list. The reference manual documents an Encoding Profile dropdown with the options Auto, Base, Main, Main10, Main 4:2:2 10 and High, describing High as "For H.264, intended for Blu-Ray and HD transmission." Which of those a given OS supplies on the free version is not stated anywhere — check the official documentation.

MP4 and QuickTime are described differently. The manual's container list says only "MP4: Dedicated MP4 encoding lets you export H.264-encoded movies", while its QuickTime entry lists H.264, HEVC, H.265, VP9 and more. The codec list's table, meanwhile, does show encode values for H.265 in mp4. Both statements are official; there is no single answer to quote. The H.264 Master preset itself "defaults to rendering in single clip mode, with the Format set to QuickTime, and the Codec set to H.264."

Hardware acceleration is a checkbox with conditions. The manual states: "DaVinci Resolve supports QuickSync hardware encoding of H.264 and HEVC, if available on your workstation", and that workstations with NVENC-capable NVIDIA GPUs "will present alternative accelerated options". Which one you get is a property of your machine, not of your Resolve licence.

FAQ

Can the free version of DaVinci Resolve export H.264? On Windows the codec list says "8-bit OS-supported profiles. More profiles and GPU acceleration in Studio" — a restriction on profiles, not a block. On macOS the row is simply "Yes, GPU accelerated". On Rocky Linux 8.6 (CUDA) the row says "Studio Only (GPU accelerated on Nvidia graphics)".

Is H.264 export really Studio only on Linux? That is what the Linux chapter says, and the restriction is listed on decode as well as encode. The encode cell reads "Studio and Nvidia graphics (GPU accelerated)", naming both a licence and a GPU vendor.

Does the free version add a watermark to H.264 exports? Blackmagic's documentation doesn't state this. The only watermark language found in these documents is a footnote about easyDCP formats, which "may appear invalid or watermarked without license" — unrelated to ordinary H.264 or H.265 output.

Can I export 4K H.264 without Studio? The codec list note says "Encoding video resolutions >= 4K is only supported with DaVinci Resolve Studio", while the product page says the free version can edit and finish at Ultra HD 3840 x 2160. Whether UHD falls under that note is not defined officially — check the official documentation.

Do these values ever change? Yes, and the document says so itself: "Specifications format and codec support subject to change without notice." Re-check the current PDF rather than a forum screenshot.
