In DaVinci Resolve's Deliver page, MP4 and QuickTime are two entries in the same Format dropdown — but the reference manual describes them very differently: the MP4 entry mentions only H.264, while the QuickTime entry lists H.264, HEVC, H.265 and VP9 alongside a long run of mastering codecs.
That asymmetry is the whole story of this comparison, and it shows up in three places you can check yourself: the Format list, the official render presets, and the fine print on three encoder controls.
What the manual says about each, word for word
The DaVinci Resolve 21 Reference Manual describes the two containers like this.
MP4:
"MP4: Dedicated MP4 encoding lets you export H.264-encoded movies."
QuickTime:
"QuickTime: Apple's file-based media format, used when delivering Apple ProRes, DNxHD or DNxHR wrapped in QuickTime, GoPro Cineform RGB 16-bit and YUV 10-bit, Grass Valley HQ and HQX, Kakadu JPEG 2000, H.264, HEVC, H.265 (single or multi-pass), Photo JPEG, Kakadu JPEG 2000, Uncompressed 8- and 10-bit formats with ARGB/BGRA/RGB/YUV channel orders, and VP9 at 8-, 10-, and 12-bits."
One qualifier applies to both, and it matters before you assume any entry will be on your machine. The manual introduces the whole list as "a dropdown menu that gives access to the container formats that are currently available on your system," and adds that "the available options depend on whether you have Final Cut Pro and QuickTime installed, and on the operating system you're using."
So the honest framing is not "Resolve supports these formats." It is: this is what your install currently offers you.
The official presets do not default to MP4
If you assume MP4 is the default modern container, the shipped presets say otherwise. The manual spells out what each one sets:
"H.264 Master: For outputting H.264 files of a whole program. When selected, defaults to rendering in single clip mode, with the Format set to QuickTime, and the Codec set to H.264."
"H.265 Master: For outputting H.265 files of a whole program. When selected, defaults to rendering in single clip mode, with the Format set to QuickTime, and the Codec set to H.265."
Both Master presets land on QuickTime. Meanwhile, every one of Resolve's upload presets goes the other way:

Read that as Blackmagic's own split: mastering presets use QuickTime, delivery-to-a-website presets use MP4. The four upload presets also share an audio codec (AAC) and differ only in Encoding Profile and audio source.
Three encoder controls the manual scopes to QuickTime
This is the concrete thing you give up by choosing MP4, and it is stated three separate times in the render parameters chapter.
"Multi-pass encode: (Available for QuickTime H.264 and H.265) You can choose between Single and Multi-pass encoding. Single pass is faster, but multi-pass yields superior results when quality is important. When you enable Multi-pass, the number of passes performed is automatic."
"Key Frames: (Available for QuickTime H.264 and H.265) You can choose Automatic, or select a duration for manual keyframe insertion."
"Frame Reordering: (Available for QuickTime H.264 and H.265) On by default, Frame Reordering enables the encoding of B frames to improve the quality of the resulting compressed movie file. Turning off Frame Reordering will speed encoding performance at the expense of visual quality."
The parenthetical is the load-bearing part. The same chapter opens the section by saying the extra options appear "if you choose MP4 as the format, or QuickTime with H.264, H.265, or VP9 as the codec" — so an MP4 job does get that panel, but three of its controls are documented as QuickTime-scoped.
If quality per bit is what you care about, that is the argument for QuickTime: multi-pass is where a two-pass encode would come from, and the manual only offers it there.
Not everything is one-sided. Chapter markers work in both: "Chapters from Markers: (QuickTime or MP4 only) Embeds chapter points in the rendered file corresponding to the marker's position on the Timeline of the selected marker color."
The H.265-in-MP4 question has two official answers
Here the documents do not agree, and you should know that before you plan a delivery.
The manual's Format list, quoted above, only credits MP4 with H.264. But Blackmagic's Supported Formats and Codecs PDF (cover dated July 2025) has an mp4 row for H.265 with encode values filled in — on macOS it reads "Yes, GPU accelerated" for both decode and encode.
Both statements are official and current. Rather than pick a winner, check the current behaviour in the official documentation for your platform and Resolve build, and have a fallback ready.
One related detail from that same table is unambiguous and worth planning around: on macOS, H.265 shows "Alpha Exports: Yes" for mov and mkv, and – for mp4. If you need an HEVC file that carries an alpha channel, the codec table points you at QuickTime or MKV, not MP4.
If you already exported a .mov and need an .mp4
Re-rendering is not always necessary. If the only problem is the wrapper — some upload form insists on .mp4, or a viewer will not open .mov — converting the container is faster and does not involve touching the Deliver page again.

One thing neither container gives you inside Resolve: a re-wrap with no re-encode. The Supported Formats and Codecs table lists Codec Passthrough as – for H.264, H.265, MV-HEVC, AV1 and VP9 across platforms and containers. Passthrough values are filled in for formats like Apple ProRes (listed as mov), DNxHD and DNxHR instead. That is also the answer to "I made no changes, so why did the file get worse?" — with those codecs there is nothing to copy through.
Captions behave differently in the two containers
Subtitles can also come out as separate files. The manual scopes the Deliver page's Export As pop-up to the "As a separate file" format, and says its "Options include: IMSC1, DFXP, SRT, and WebVTT."
Embedded captions are not. The manual says: "As embedded captions: Outputs the currently selected subtitle track as an embedded metadata layer within supported media formats. There is currently support for CEA-608 closed captions within MXF OP1A and QuickTime files."
MP4 is not on that list. If the deliverable needs baked-in closed captions as metadata, the documented options are MXF OP1A or QuickTime. Note the other limit in that same sentence — it embeds the currently selected subtitle track, not every subtitle track in the timeline.
So which should you pick?
- Mastering, archiving, or anything you will re-edit later — QuickTime. It is what both Master presets choose, and it is the container where multi-pass, manual Key Frames and Frame Reordering are documented.
- Uploading to YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok or Dropbox — MP4 with H.264, because that is exactly what those four presets set for you.
- HEVC with alpha — QuickTime or MKV, per the codec table's Alpha Exports column.
- Embedded CEA-608 captions — QuickTime or MXF OP1A.
Blackmagic's own footer on the codec list is a good habit to adopt: "Specifications format and codec support subject to change without notice." Verify before a deadline, not after.
FAQ
Is MP4 or QuickTime better quality in DaVinci Resolve? The container itself is not the quality knob — the codec and its settings are. What differs is the settings you are offered: Multi-pass encode, Key Frames and Frame Reordering are each documented as "(Available for QuickTime H.264 and H.265)", so a multi-pass H.264 render is a QuickTime-side option in the manual.
Why do the H.264 and H.265 Master presets export .mov files? Because both presets set Format to QuickTime by default — the manual states it directly for each. You can change the Format afterwards, but the shipped default is QuickTime, not MP4.
Can DaVinci Resolve export H.265 in an MP4 container?
The two official documents differ. The manual's Format list says MP4 "lets you export H.264-encoded movies", while the July 2025 Supported Formats and Codecs PDF lists encode values in the mp4 row for H.265. Check the official documentation for your platform and build.
Does changing MP4 to QuickTime avoid re-encoding my clips?
No. Bypass re-encode relies on the Codec Passthrough column, and that column is – for H.264, H.265, AV1 and VP9 in every container. It is populated for formats such as ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR.
What if the site I am uploading to rejects .mov? Convert the wrapper rather than re-rendering the timeline. The MOV to MP4 converter handles it locally, and the same reasoning behind container choice applies elsewhere too — see MKV or MP4 for OBS recordings.
