If a tutorial told you to open HandBrake, go to the Web presets, and pick something starting with "Discord" — and that entry is nowhere in your list — nothing is broken. The presets were renamed. This walkthrough gets you to the ones that exist today using HandBrake's own replacement table, and explains what the new names promise and what they do not.
Before you start
The names changed twice, in two different releases. HandBrake's preset documentation says: "As of HandBrake 1.6.0, the Vimeo YouTube HQ Presets have been renamed Creator, the Gmail Presets have been renamed Email 25 MB, and the Discord Presets have been renamed Social." Then: "As of HandBrake 1.7.0, the Email 25 MB Presets have been superseded by the Social 25 MB Presets, which for shorter durations produce higher quality video at up to 60 frames per second."
So a guide written before 1.6.0 points at names that no longer exist, and a guide written between 1.6.0 and 1.7.0 points at Email 25 MB presets that have since been superseded. If your own list still shows Discord-named entries, you are on an older build.
One prerequisite on the input side: HandBrake "generally can open whatever FFmpeg will," but videos "made using consumer video editing software such as iMovie and Shotcut must first be exported to a common video format."
Step 1: Look under Web > Social, not Discord
There is no group or entry called Discord anymore — that single line, "the Discord Presets have been renamed Social," is why the old instructions dead-end. The workflow in those tutorials is still right; only the label is wrong.
Step 2: Know which of the two Web families you want
"HandBrake's Web Presets use the broadly compatible MP4 container and are tailored for sharing videos on the Internet." They split in two:
- Creator presets "produce videos suitable for uploading to video hosting services such as Vimeo and YouTube," built to "reduce generational loss commonly accrued during re-encoding into multiple formats and resolutions by video hosting services." This is the group formerly called Vimeo YouTube HQ.
- Social presets "are designed to guarantee video up to a certain duration will produce a file smaller than a specific size for sharing with online social communities such as Discord. The maximum Source duration and target file size are part of each Preset name."
For a chat upload you want Social. HandBrake still names Discord in that description, so the intent of the old presets survived the rename intact.
Step 3: Pick the Social preset that matches your clip length
There are four, all listed as MP4 / H.264 / AAC stereo, Medium encoding speed, and a file size of "25 MB or less":
- Social 25 MB 30 Seconds 1080p60
- Social 25 MB 1 Minute 720p60
- Social 25 MB 2 Minutes 540p60
- Social 25 MB 5 Minutes 360p60
The pattern is a straight trade: the longer the clip you need to fit, the lower the resolution you get. Choose by duration first — the size target is 25 MB in every row, so duration is the only variable that moves.
Two details are easy to skim past. The picture quality column in HandBrake's table reads "Depends on source" rather than a quality grade: the preset promises a ceiling on the file, not a look. And the group carries a footnote — "Social presets are designed and tested to meet these specific services' video guidelines. Compatibility with other services is possible, but neither tested nor guaranteed."
Step 4: Translate your tutorial's preset name
HandBrake publishes a mapping for every removed Web preset. If the article you were following names one of these, take the replacement:

Every long-duration legacy preset collapses into the same replacement, Social 25 MB 5 Minutes 360p60, plus an instruction to keep reducing resolution and bit rate yourself. There is no ten-minute Social preset — past five minutes, HandBrake is telling you to take over manually.
Step 5: Read the numbers in the name as a ceiling
This is what surprises people who expect "1080p60" to mean their video becomes 1080p60. Presets only ever move downward: "When selecting one of these Presets, higher resolution video will be downscaled to a maximum resolution, and higher frame rates will be peak limited to a maximum frame rate. Audio and other settings may also be enforced."
The official examples make it concrete:
- "When selecting one of the 720p30 Presets, a Source with 1080p video at 60 frames per second will be downscaled to 720p resolution and peak limited to 30 frames per second"
- "When selecting one of the 720p30 Presets, a Source with 480p video at 30 frames per second will not be scaled or peak limited"
A 480p phone clip run through Social 25 MB 30 Seconds 1080p60 therefore stays 480p. No upscaling, no interpolated frames. Audio gets flattened too: "When selecting a Preset that does not include surround sound, only stereo audio is encoded; the discrete surround audio is dropped." All four Social presets are AAC stereo.

Common mistakes
- Concluding your install is broken when "Discord" is missing. It is a rename. Web > Social.
- Following a guide that says to use an Email 25 MB preset. Those were themselves the renamed Gmail presets, then superseded in 1.7.0. They are two changes behind.
- Expecting the size guarantee past the duration in the name. The wording is "guarantee video up to a certain duration will produce a file smaller than a specific size." Go longer and you are outside what that sentence covers.
- Trusting a blog that lists each Social preset's bit rate or RF. HandBrake publishes the container, codec, quality tier and target size — not the internal parameter values.
- Dragging the quality slider without knowing which scale you are on. The recommended ranges are encoder-specific, and HandBrake warns values "are not comparable between encodes across multiple encoders."
FAQ
Where is the Discord preset in HandBrake? It no longer exists under that name. Per the official docs, "the Discord Presets have been renamed Social" as of HandBrake 1.6.0. Look under Web > Social 25 MB.

That duration is the one printed in the preset name. Whether the target includes the audio track or leaves headroom is not stated in the documentation.
My source is 60fps but the output is 30fps — did the preset do that? Yes, if the preset name ends in 30. Frame rates above the number in the name are peak limited and higher resolutions are downscaled; lower ones are left alone. The four Social presets are all p60.
Can I just use the default preset instead? For general encoding, yes — HandBrake calls Fast 1080p30 "a good choice if you're just getting started," and "fast and compatible across a wide range of software and devices." But it carries no size target, so it is the wrong tool when the whole point is landing under an upload cap.
