Does AirDrop Compress Video Quality? What Apple Documents

Apple documents exactly one AirDrop downgrade chain from start to finish, and it applies to ProRes video: the original ProRes file goes to a specific list of supported devices, an HEVC version goes to devices that support HEVC, and H.264 goes to everything else. If you AirDropped a clip and it arrived as H.264, that chain is the one official description of how it got there.

Everything else about AirDrop and video quality is less settled than forum threads make it sound, so it pays to separate what Apple states from what it doesn't — and to use the switches Apple does document.

What Apple actually says about sharing and formats

Apple's HEIF and HEVC support article covers three different sharing routes and gives three different answers:

Two qualifiers in the middle row do a lot of work, and both get dropped when this gets repeated.

The first is "might" — not "will". The second is the condition attached to it: "the receiving device doesn't support the newer media formats". Apple's stated trigger is the receiver's capability, not the act of AirDropping. A modern iPhone sending to another modern iPhone is not the case that sentence describes.

The one path Apple documents end to end: ProRes

The ProRes article carries a footnote that is, as far as we can find, the only place Apple publishes an explicit ordering. It opens with "AirDrop transfers the original ProRes video to supported devices:" and then names them:

  • iPhone 17 models, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 models, iPhone 14 models, iPhone 13 models
  • Mac with Mac OS X 10.6 and later
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation) and later, 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) and later
  • iPad Air (5th generation) and later, and iPad mini (6th generation)

And then the fallback, verbatim:

"For all other devices, you'll share an HEVC video if the devices supports it, or H.264 video if the device doesn't."

That is a clean three-step ladder: original ProRes, then HEVC, then H.264. It explains the exact symptom people search for — a ProRes clip leaving a Pro iPhone and landing on an older iPad or a non-Apple device as H.264.

Two limits on how far you can carry this:

  1. The footnote's scope is ProRes. It is not a statement about what AirDrop does with ordinary HEVC video from the camera. For that case, Apple's documentation goes no further than the "might ... such as JPEG or H.264" sentence above, with the receiver-capability condition attached. If you need certainty about a specific pairing of devices, check the current behaviour in Apple's official documentation rather than assuming the ProRes ladder applies.
  2. The size difference is why this matters. Apple states that "ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files" — note "up to". A downgrade in that chain is not a subtle re-encode.

The fastest fix: tell the share sheet not to convert

Before you AirDrop, tap Options at the top of the share sheet. Apple describes the file format control there in one sentence:

"Adjust the file format: Tap Automatic for the best file format for the destination, tap Current to prevent a file format conversion, or tap Most Compatible and files may convert to JPEG or MOV."

Current is the documented off switch for conversion. Automatic optimises for the destination; Most Compatible does the opposite of what you want here.

If the receiving end genuinely cannot handle the original — a Windows PC, an Android phone, an older editor — convert deliberately rather than letting the transfer decide for you. Watch out: "Most Compatible" means two different things

This trips up more people than the AirDrop question itself.

  • In Settings > Camera > Formats, Most Compatible changes what the camera captures. Apple: "All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format." That option only appears on devices that can capture HEIF or HEVC in the first place.
  • In the share sheet, Most Compatible is about the outgoing file, and Apple's wording there is "files may convert to JPEG or MOV".

Same two words, two different settings, two different outcomes.

Turn on All Photos Data for the original

Apple's ProRes steps and the Share long videos page both point at the same toggle. From the latter: "If you want to send the video in its original format, including metadata, location, and any associated edit history or captions, tap Options, then turn on All Photos Data."

One version caveat worth knowing: the iOS 27 Share photos and videos page describes All Photos Data as "(available with AirDrop only)", while the iOS 26 version of the same page says "(available with AirDrop and iCloud links only)". If you are following a tutorial, check which iOS it was written for.

Other reasons the clip looks worse on the other end

A format change is not the only documented way quality differs after a transfer.

Optimize Storage is on. Apple: "When you turn on Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos, while iCloud Photos stores your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version." What the space-saving version is, in resolution or bitrate terms, is not stated in Apple's documentation — but if the full-resolution file is in iCloud and not on the phone, that is a real difference before AirDrop is involved.

The video is HDR and the receiver is old. Apple's recording-settings page is specific: iPhone "shares HDR videos with devices using iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, macOS 10.15.4, or later; other devices receive an SDR version of the same video." That is a documented quality change with a hard version boundary.

You fell back to Messages, not AirDrop. Apple states that "If you use SMS or MMS messaging to send photos or videos, your carrier may set size limits for attachments" and that "your iPhone can compress photo and video attachments when necessary." That sentence is scoped to SMS and MMS, and that page does not say what parameters the compression targets.

The receiver is an older device and the file is high-spec. Apple's guidance here is about resolution and frame rate rather than codec: "Resolutions of 1080p or lower and frame rates of 60 fps or lower are more broadly compatible with older devices." Recording a step down is sometimes easier than fixing it afterwards. When it is not, compressing the file yourself gives you control over what gets lost.

How to tell it worked

Compare the file on the receiving device with the source, not with your memory of it. Apple gives exactly one per-minute size figure you can check against: "one minute of regular 1080p 30 fps video is approximately 65 MB". That number is scoped to 1080p at 30 fps, and the official pages we could find give no equivalent for 4K, 60 fps, or ProRes, so do not extrapolate from it.

If the transferred file is dramatically smaller than the original and the original was ProRes, the ladder above is the likely explanation. If sizes match and the format matches, nothing was converted.

FAQ

Does AirDrop compress video quality? Apple's documented behaviour is conditional. It states that media shared by AirDrop, Messages, or email "might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264" when "the receiving device doesn't support the newer media formats". The one fully documented chain is for ProRes: original to supported devices, otherwise HEVC, otherwise H.264.

Why did my ProRes video arrive as H.264? Because the receiving device was not on Apple's supported list and did not support HEVC either. Apple's footnote names the supported models explicitly, and H.264 is the last rung.

How do I AirDrop a video without any conversion? In the share sheet, tap Options and choose Current, which Apple describes as being there "to prevent a file format conversion". Turn on All Photos Data if you also want edit history and metadata to travel with it.

Does iCloud sharing avoid this entirely? For format, yes, per Apple: media shared via iCloud Photos "is preserved in its original format, resolution, and frame rate." That is a stronger statement than anything Apple says about AirDrop.
