Cinematic video on iPhone is set to record at 1080p HD at 30 fps out of the box, and the two higher options Apple documents are 4K at 24 fps and 4K at 30 fps. If you shot something in Cinematic mode and it came back at 1080p when you expected 4K, nothing went wrong — you were on the default.
The setting is real, it is one screen deep, and most people never find it. Here is exactly what Apple's own pages say about it, including one restriction that catches out anyone shooting Pro video.

The full sentence from Apple's video recording settings page reads:
"On supported models, Cinematic video is set to record at 1080 HD at 30 fps. To switch to 4K at 24 fps or 4K at 30 fps, go to Settings > Camera > Record Cinematic."
Two details in that sentence are easy to skim past. The first is "On supported models" — Apple attaches that qualifier, so the presence of the setting depends on which iPhone you have. The second is that the 4K options come with frame rates attached: 24 or 30. Those are the two the page names.
That lines up with what the spec sheets say. Both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro tech spec pages list Cinematic mode identically — "up to 4K Dolby Vision at 30 fps" — which is worth knowing if you assumed the Pro model unlocked something extra here. On this particular row, it does not.
Where the setting lives
Apple gives the path verbatim: Settings > Camera > Record Cinematic. Note that this is a different screen from the main video one. The regular video recording settings are their own control, and the options there are broader — Apple's camera page says that "Depending on your iPhone model, you can record video in high-quality formats, like HD, 4K, HD (PAL), and 4K (PAL)," and that "Also depending on your model, you can change the fps rates to 24, 25, 30, 60, or 120."
So 60 fps and 120 fps exist on the main video setting for supported models. The Cinematic screen is the one that lists 1080p30, 4K24 and 4K30. Changing one does not change the other.
Why the file gets bigger, and how much
Apple states the relationship plainly: "Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files." Moving Cinematic from 1080p to 4K is exactly that trade.
How much bigger? Here is where you should be suspicious of any article that hands you a number. The only per-minute figures Apple publishes in the pages we could find are for 1080p at 30 fps, and they appear in an archived iOS 18 version of the spatial video page: "one minute of regular 1080p 30 fps video is approximately 65 MB." Note the "approximately," and note the scope — 1080p, 30 fps. There is no matching official figure for 4K Cinematic, so for a real answer, check the current storage estimates in Apple's own documentation or on the Record Video screen on your device.

What to do when the file is too big to share
The practical problem with shooting 4K Cinematic is rarely the phone — it is everything after. Apple is explicit that attachment ceilings are not theirs to set: "The size limit of attachments is determined by your service provider."

Gotchas specific to Cinematic mode
ProRes and Cinematic are mutually exclusive. This is the restriction that surprises people who bought a Pro model specifically for ProRes. Apple states it on two separate pages. The ProRes support article says: "You can't use ProRes with Cinematic mode, slo-mo mode, or time-lapse video." The user guide puts it as: "ProRes isn't supported in Cinematic, Time-lapse, or Slo-Mo mode." Same restriction, two wordings — there is no setting combination that gets you both. If you want the depth-of-field effect, you are shooting Cinematic; if you want ProRes, you are in the regular video mode. Turning ProRes off does not leave you in a neutral state. Apple: "If you turn ProRes off in the Camera app, the video format defaults to either High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or Most Compatible (H.264)." Enhanced Stabilization crops your frame. Apple's video settings page notes that "the Enhanced Stabilization setting zooms in slightly to provide improved stabilization while recording in Video mode or Cinematic mode. Enhanced Stabilization is on by default." Cinematic mode is named in that sentence, so if your framing feels tighter than what you saw before you hit record, this is the documented reason.
Low light can change your frame rate for you. The same page says "iPhone can improve the video quality in low-light situations by automatically reducing the frame rate to 24 fps." So a clip you believed was 30 fps may not be.
Dolby Vision has a playback boundary. Apple documents it as: "On supported models, iPhone records video in HDR and shares HDR videos with devices using iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, macOS 10.15.4, or later; other devices receive an SDR version of the same video." Since the spec sheets describe Cinematic in Dolby Vision terms, this is the rule that governs how your clip looks on an older machine.

How do I turn on 4K Cinematic mode on iPhone?
