iPhone HDR Video Looks Washed Out on Windows: The Fix

Apple publishes an exact version line for HDR video sharing, and everything on the far side of it gets a different file. If your clip looks rich on the iPhone and flat, grey or washed out on a PC, you are almost certainly not looking at the same video the phone plays — and Apple's own iPhone User Guide says so in one sentence.

That sentence is the whole story, so it is worth reading before touching any setting.

What Apple actually documents about iPhone HDR video

Two separate facts from the iPhone User Guide, and they are easy to conflate.

First, what the camera records. Apple's HDR camera settings page says: "On supported models, iPhone records video in Dolby Vision HDR for true-to-life color and contrast." Note the qualifier — "on supported models" — this is not every iPhone.

Second, what happens when you send that file somewhere. Apple's video recording settings page states: "On supported models, iPhone records video in HDR and shares HDR videos with devices using iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, macOS 10.15.4, or later; other devices receive an SDR version of the same video."

That is the boundary, verbatim: iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, macOS 10.15.4, or later. Below those versions, Apple describes the recipient as receiving "an SDR version of the same video" — not a broken file, not a failed transfer, a different version.

That page stops there — it doesn't say how the SDR version is produced or where it comes from. If you need that detail, check the official documentation rather than any blog's explanation of it.

Why a Windows PC sits outside that sentence

Look at the list again: it names iOS, iPadOS and macOS versions. A Windows PC is not one of the platforms Apple enumerates on that line, which is exactly why "it looks fine on my Mac, terrible on my PC" is such a common pairing.

Getting a video onto Windows usually means a cable rather than a share sheet, and Apple describes that path separately. From the HEIF and HEVC support article: "When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iPhone or iPad into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264. If you don't want it to be converted, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos, then scroll down and tap Keep Originals."

Read the qualifier: "might be converted", not will be. Apple's wording here is deliberately conditional, and it is worth knowing which of the two you got before you start blaming a player. For the Windows workflow itself, Apple's transfer article gives one prerequisite step — "Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store" — plus a warning that catches a lot of people: "If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you must download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone or iPad before you import to your PC."

The fastest fix: hand over a file the other machine can just play

Whichever side the mismatch is on, the reliable move is to give the other device a conventionally encoded file instead of arguing with its player.

On a Mac, Apple documents the conversion in QuickTime Player directly: "If you open an HEVC video in QuickTime Player on your Mac, choose File > Export As. In the dialog that opens, use the pop-up menu to change from Smaller File Size (HEVC) to Greater Compatibility (H.264) before you click Save. If you see an HEVC checkbox instead of a pop-up menu, just deselect the checkbox before saving." Those two labels — Smaller File Size (HEVC) and Greater Compatibility (H.264) — are the literal on-screen wording, so they are easy to find.

Other causes, in rough order of likelihood

The share sheet quietly converted it. iPhone's share options include a file format control, worded by Apple as: "Adjust the file format: Tap Automatic for the best file format for the destination, tap Current to prevent a file format conversion, or tap Most Compatible and files may convert to JPEG or MOV." You shared an optimized copy, not the original. Apple's iCloud Photos page: "When you turn on Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos, while iCloud Photos stores your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version." That page doesn't give the resolution or bitrate of the space-saving version, so treat "the phone had the original" as an assumption worth checking.

The route you picked matters. Apple draws a clear distinction here. Via iCloud Photos: "If sharing this media via iCloud Photos, the media is preserved in its original format, resolution, and frame rate." Via other paths: "If sharing this media using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, and the receiving device doesn't support the newer media formats, the media might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264." Again, "might", and the trigger is stated as the receiving device not supporting the newer formats.

The receiving hardware is old. Apple quantifies this instead of hand-waving: "On some older devices, support for HEVC is affected by the resolution and frame rate (fps) of the video. Resolutions of 1080p or lower and frame rates of 60 fps or lower are more broadly compatible with older devices." If you control the shoot, that pair of numbers is the practical target.

One thing to be careful about: the Settings > Camera > Formats choice between High Efficiency and Most Compatible is documented by Apple in terms of encoding — "All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format" — and it is a different control from the Most Compatible option in the share sheet above. How to tell it worked

Play the exported file on the machine that was showing the problem, not on the phone. If the colour is now neutral rather than flat-and-grey, the encoding was the issue. If it still looks wrong on that one machine but correct everywhere else, the phone is no longer the variable — the player or display on that machine is.

FAQ
