On Apple's own support page for HEIF and HEVC media, iCloud Photos is the one sharing path described as lossless: "If sharing this media via iCloud Photos, the media is preserved in its original format, resolution, and frame rate." Every other path on that same page gets a different sentence.
That contrast is the whole story, and it is unusually useful because Apple wrote both halves of it in the same place. You do not have to trust a forum post about whether iCloud recompresses your 4K clip — you can read Apple describing iCloud Photos one way and AirDrop, Messages and email another way, two paragraphs apart.
The limits, at a glance

Two qualifiers you should not drop when you repeat any of this:
- The last two rows say "might", not "will". Apple does not promise a conversion, and it does not promise the absence of one.
- The AirDrop/Messages/email row has a condition attached. The full sentence reads: "If sharing this media using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, and the receiving device doesn't support the newer media formats, the media might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264." The trigger is the receiving device, not the act of AirDropping.
The iCloud Photos sentence carries no such condition. That is the asymmetry worth remembering.
Why the iCloud path is described differently
The page that contains all three sentences is about HEIF and HEVC specifically — the formats an iPhone uses when Settings has High Efficiency selected. Apple describes those formats this way: "HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and iCloud Photos, while preserving the same visual quality."
So the compression people worry about has already happened, at capture time, before iCloud is involved. The question "does iCloud Photos compress videos" is really two questions:
- Does iCloud re-encode what you hand it? Apple's answer is the "original format, resolution, and frame rate" sentence, backed by the iCloud Photos page's list of formats stored "in their original formats at full resolution".
- Does the copy that reaches another person or another computer match the original? There Apple's answer changes depending on the route, and that is where the "might be converted" sentences live.
One caveat on that format list: it includes MP4, while Apple's share-sheet documentation mentions MOV. Neither is a statement about what file extension the camera writes, so do not read either list as the answer to "what container does my iPhone record?" — for that, check the official documentation.
The setting that changes what is on your phone
If you have ever handed someone a video and felt it was not the file you shot, the likeliest suspect is not iCloud's storage but Optimize Storage. Apple: "When you turn on Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos, while iCloud Photos stores your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version. When you need more device storage, iCloud Photos optimizes your library, starting with photos and videos you access least."
Read it carefully: the original is intact in iCloud. What lives on the phone may be a space-saving version. Apple does not state the resolution or bitrate of that space-saving version on the pages cited here, so treat any specific figure you see elsewhere with suspicion and check the official documentation.
Apple does spell out one practical consequence, for Windows users: "If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you must download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone or iPad before you import to your PC."
What to do when the file you end up with is the wrong size
The flip side of a lossless sync is that the file stays as big as it was. An untouched original is exactly what you want for archiving and exactly what you do not want when something else imposes an upload cap.
For scale, the only per-minute figure Apple publishes in these pages is narrow: "one minute of regular 1080p 30 fps video is approximately 65 MB", stated in a note about spatial video in the iOS 18 version of the iPhone User Guide. That is 1080p at 30 fps only — Apple gives no equivalent number for 4K or 60 fps, so do not extrapolate.

Platform-specific gotchas
There are two different things called "Most Compatible", and they are not the same setting. In Settings, under Camera then Formats, Most Compatible is a capture setting: "All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format." In the share sheet it is an output setting, and the User Guide describes the three options together: "Tap Automatic for the best file format for the destination, tap Current to prevent a file format conversion, or tap Most Compatible and files may convert to JPEG or MOV." Note that Current is Apple's own switch for preventing conversion.
USB import has its own switch. Apple: "When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iPhone or iPad into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264. If you don't want it to be converted, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos, then scroll down and tap Keep Originals."
Deletion syncs, and iCloud Photos is not a backup. Apple states both plainly: "When you delete photos and videos on one device, they're deleted everywhere that you use iCloud Photos. If you delete something accidentally, you can recover it in the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days." And: "When you turn on iCloud Photos, your photos and videos automatically upload to iCloud. They're not duplicated in your iCloud backup, so keep backup copies of your library."
FAQ
Does iCloud Photos compress my videos? Apple's HEIF/HEVC page says media shared via iCloud Photos "is preserved in its original format, resolution, and frame rate", and the iCloud Photos page says photos and videos are stored "in their original formats at full resolution". Compression to HEVC, if any, happened at capture time.
Why does the clip I AirDropped look different from the one in iCloud? Apple's wording covers this: if you share by AirDrop, Messages or email "and the receiving device doesn't support the newer media formats", the media "might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264". The condition is on the receiving device.
Does Optimize Storage delete my originals? No — Apple says the device keeps "space-saving versions" while iCloud Photos stores "your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version". The original lives in iCloud; the local copy is the one that shrinks.
Why did my video become H.264 when I imported it to my Mac or PC? That is the documented USB-import behaviour: the media "might be converted to JPEG or H.264". Turning on Keep Originals in Settings, under Apps then Photos, is Apple's stated way to stop it.
