If copying video off your iPhone over a cable feels slow, the first thing to check is not the cable — it is which USB speed Apple lists for your exact model. Within a single iPhone generation, that number is not the same for every model, and almost nobody brings it up when explaining slow imports.
Everyone sees the same USB-C port and assumes the same port. The spec pages say otherwise.
What the spec pages actually say
Apple's tech specs page for iPhone 17 Pro lists the connector as:

Two phones from the same launch, both with USB-C, and the two figures Apple prints for them differ by a factor of roughly twenty. That is the single fact that explains most "why does my wired import crawl" complaints, and it has nothing to do with your computer, your cable brand, or your patience.
Three things to keep straight about those numbers:
- Both are written as "up to". They are the interface rates Apple lists, not a promise about what any particular import will do.
- The spec pages give a rate, not a duration. Neither page converts these figures into minutes for a given file size, so treat any "a 10 GB import takes N minutes" number you see elsewhere as somebody's estimate rather than a spec.
- These two lines are from the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro spec pages specifically. For any other model, read that model's own page rather than assuming it inherits either figure.

Why video makes the gap so obvious
A slow interface only hurts when there is a lot to move, and video is where the volume is.
Apple's iPhone user guide states the rule plainly: "Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files." The guide also notes that "By default, iPhone records video at 30 frames per second (fps)." Anything you have raised above that default is producing bigger files than the baseline.
For scale, Apple gives exactly one per-minute figure in its documentation, in the iOS 18 version of the spatial video page: "one minute of regular 1080p 30 fps video is approximately 65 MB", alongside approximately 130 MB per minute for spatial video recorded at 1080p 30 fps in SDR. Note the scope carefully — that 65 MB applies to 1080p at 30 fps, and the word is "approximately". that page gives no equivalent figure for 4K or 60 fps, so do not scale it up in your head.
ProRes is the extreme case. Apple states that "ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files." Again, "up to" — but even at a fraction of that multiplier, a ProRes shoot is the worst possible thing to push through a slower interface. Apple's own ProRes requirements make the same point from the other direction: for recording to external storage, it instructs you to "Use a USB 3 cable with speed of at least 10 Gbits per second." The fix: move less data across the wire
If your model is listed at USB 2, no accessory changes what Apple prints on that spec page. The workable moves are about reducing what has to cross the cable, and about making sure the transfer is not doing avoidable extra work.

The other half of the fix is recording settings. Since resolution and frame rate drive file size by Apple's own statement, shooting your everyday clips at a modest setting and reserving 4K or high frame rates for footage that needs it is the cheapest possible change. Other things that make a wired import feel slow
Work through these in order once you know your model's listed rate.
1. The full-resolution files may not be on the phone yet. Apple describes Optimize Storage this way: "When you turn on Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos, while iCloud Photos stores your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version." For Windows imports, Apple is explicit about the consequence: "If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you must download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone or iPad before you import to your PC." 2. The import may be converting formats. Apple states: "When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iPhone or iPad into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264. If you don't want it to be converted, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos, then scroll down and tap Keep Originals." The word is "might", not "will". that page describes this as a format change and does not state which encoder or settings are used, so treat it as a question of what lands on your computer, not as a documented speed factor. 3. On Windows, use Apple's own path. Apple's instruction is direct: "Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store." If you are fighting with a third-party importer, this is the documented route.
4. Check what you are actually exporting. When exporting to an external drive from the Photos app, Apple notes: "For photos and videos that have been edited, the unmodified original version will be exported." The button is literally named Export Unmodified Original. Your edits do not come along, and the original is often the larger file.
How to tell it worked
There is no progress readout that tells you which USB generation you are on, so verify indirectly:
- Confirm the listed rate. Open your model's tech specs page and read the connector line. If it says USB 2, you now know the ceiling is a property of the phone, and you can stop replacing cables.
- Check the file sizes on disk, before and after compressing. That number is the one that determines how much has to move.
- Make sure iCloud Photos has finished downloading originals before you start a PC import, per Apple's instruction above.
- Turn on Keep Originals if what arrives on your computer is not the format you shot.
FAQ
Why is my iPhone 17 slower over USB-C than an iPhone 17 Pro?
Because Apple lists different connector speeds for them. The iPhone 17 Pro spec page says USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s); the iPhone 17 spec page says USB 2 (up to 480Mb/s). Same generation, same port shape, different listed rate.
Will a better USB-C cable fix it? A cable cannot change what Apple lists for your model's connector. The only cable requirement in the documentation we could find is for ProRes recording to external storage, where Apple says to use a USB 3 cable rated at least 10 Gbits per second — that is about recording, not about importing to a computer.
How long should it take to transfer 10 GB from my iPhone? The spec pages we cite give an interface rate and stop there — they do not convert it into a duration for any file size. Check the official documentation if you need a figure you can rely on.
Does importing over USB change my video format?
It might. Apple says media imported from an attached iPhone into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC "might be converted to JPEG or H.264", and points to Keep Originals in Settings > Apps > Photos if you do not want that.
Is ProRes footage worse for this? It is the hardest case, because Apple states ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Apple also requires USB 3 at 10 Gbits per second for ProRes external recording, which tells you how much throughput that format expects.
