There is no single answer: X's own documentation currently publishes five different maximum video lengths — 140 seconds, 20 minutes, 125 minutes, roughly 3 hours, and 4 hours — and every one of them is official, live, and attached to a different scope.
Most pages answering this question pick one number and present it as the limit. That is exactly why people get surprised at upload time. Below is each figure, the X page it comes from, and the qualifier X attaches to it.

Every cell above is quoted from a page X publishes. X does not publish a page that reconciles them, so check the current limit in the official documentation before you build a workflow around any one row.
The free-tier split: 140 seconds vs 20 minutes
The Help Center is unambiguous: "If you aren't a Premium subscriber, you can still upload videos up to 140 seconds long with a maximum file size of 512MB." The page about longer Premium videos repeats it with a platform qualifier: "If you aren't a Premium subscriber, you can still upload videos up to 140 seconds long on any platform."
The developer documentation, describing video on a Post for accounts with no Premium, lists a different range entirely — 0.5 seconds–20 minutes at 8 GB. And it explicitly claims to describe the consumer app: "Post-video caps match the X app."
So one official surface says 140 seconds, another says 20 minutes while asserting it matches the app. Both are current, and X publishes no page that settles which one applies — check the current limit in the official documentation.
The Premium split: 125 minutes vs ~3 hours vs 4 hours
Three different numbers, three official pages:
- 4 hours. "Premium subscribers are able to upload videos shorter than 4 hours at 1080p with a maximum file size of 16GB." The same page adds a resolution condition for the long end: "Premium subscribers are also able to upload videos above 2 hours and under 4 hours at 720p with a maximum file size of 16GB."
- ~3 hours. The About X Premium page: "Premium subscribers can upload videos up to ~3 hours long and up to 8GB file size (1080p) (on x.com and X for iOS only)."
- 125 minutes. The developer media documentation lists Premium and verified accounts at
0.5 seconds–125 minutesand16 GBfor video on a Post.
One of those pages does limit its own scope. The Media Studio Library page, which also states the ~3 hours / 8GB figure, opens its spec table with: "These instructions are only valid for Media Studio, and should not be followed for usage of the X developer API, Pro Media API, desktop upload, or mobile upload." That resolves Media Studio — but the About X Premium page is describing the ordinary subscriber upload benefit, and it still says ~3 hours.
One thing X is clear about: longer uploads are not reserved for the top tier. The Basic tier description lists "longer posts and longer video uploads" among its features. What X does not publish is a per-tier breakdown of the length caps, so any claim that a specific number requires a specific Premium tier has no official source behind it.
The Android ceiling
This is the qualifier people lose most often. X states: "Subscribers can upload videos up to 4 hours long (1080p) on x.com and X for iOS. Subscribers can upload videos up to 10 minutes long on Android." The About X Premium page says the same thing from the other direction, scoping its figure to "x.com and X for iOS only."
Two things not to over-read: this 10 minutes is the Premium subscriber's Android ceiling, not everyone's, and X states the free-tier 140 seconds applies "on any platform." X gives no file size figure for that Android case.
Direct messages are a separate ladder
Post limits do not carry over to DMs. X's media category table lists video in a Direct Message (dm_video) at 140 s / 512 MB by default and 10 min / 1 GB for Premium — a completely different set of numbers from the Post caps in the same table.
Length is not the only thing that rejects a video
Getting under a length cap does not guarantee the post goes out. X documents that "Upload limits and Post-create limits are separately enforced," and that a media ID that finalized successfully can still be rejected afterwards — with the message "This user is not allowed to post a video longer than N minutes." X describes N as the posting user's cap for that media, 20 minutes by default and 125 minutes for Premium or verified Post video. That mechanism is why a progress bar can reach 100% before anything fails.
Size and encoding matter independently. X's advertising help page is blunt about it: "Even if your file is under our maximum size, we may still have issues ingesting the file. Reducing the size of the file reduces the time of the upload, maximizing your chances for success." Its recommended fix is to re-export at a lower bitrate.
And the most counterintuitive one: on the Media Studio page, X writes that the error "'Video too long'... usually appears when uploading media that isn't in a supported format."

Two more published behaviours worth knowing
Quality is not guaranteed to survive. X states it may "modify or adapt your original video for distribution... including modifying the resolution and bitrate of the original video while streaming based on the speed and stability of the viewer's internet connection." Separately, the developer docs state: "Subscribed users can upload a 1080p video and get 1080p playback. Unsubscribed users can upload a 720p video and get a 720p playback."
Looping has its own threshold, stated two ways. The Help Center says videos "that are 60 seconds or shorter will automatically loop"; the ads specs page says videos "will loop if the video length is under 60 seconds." The boundary case differs between the two pages.
